It has been a long time since I have updated our project’s log, the closer we get to launch day the more hectic things are getting.
At this moment all of core functionalities of the frontoffice and backoffice are in place, we are now focusing on delivering details, and unfortunately these are taking a long time to complete.
As you might have guessed by now we will not be able to comply with the release date that we committed too, it’s the second time we have let you all down.
The project’s immensity has really taken a toll on the development team, and we were faced with technical challenged that were impossible to predict.
Tonight I will be issuing a formal statement with the project’s new release date.
You have all been fantastic and your emails of encouragement are truly what keeps us going strong despite all of the mishaps.
It’s been awhile since I have provided you guys with an update. So this week we have taken our first break since the project has began, Krish has been working non-stop and desperately needed a break. We have really made good progress on week 11, so next week things should pick up at a very good pace.
For those you who missed the post, we announced that we had to delay our launch date a couple of weeks back , but as things stand we are ahead of schedule.
Will keep you guys posted, and this weekend I have a small susprise/present to all of our blog members.
We have finally finished the community forums, and they are looking pretty good, it was quite a challenge, developing a forum from scratch turned out to be quite the endeavor, but Krish did a wonderful job, it’s exactly how I imagined it to be technically and the user experience is very slick as well.
We are now moving into the user community group’s area, that is also an important part of our community features. It will allow users to join communities that share similar movie interests. For example, you might be into independent films, and would like have discussions read reviews around this category of movies. The Ourplot Groups will allow you to do just that, it’s a community within a community.
After we are done with the entire community aspect of the site, we will focus on the user profile area that is by far, next to the movies rating system, the most important area of the site.
Unfortunately, as you might have guessed by now we are behind schedule, as a matter of fact we are dramatically behind schedule, so shortly I will be announcing the new site’s release date.
It’s so frustrating to see all the planning be thrown out of the window, I really wanted us to nail the project’s release date, and felt so comfortable with it that I made a public announcement and made a lot of deals with suppliers , partners and advertisers based on that date. I guess it’s better to release a stable site than releasing unstable code that wrecks everyone’s experience, but it really bothers me that we failed such an important milestone of the project.
Rest assured that the next release date that we will publicly release will be considerably more conservative, to prevent more delays and mishaps.
I would like to thank everyone that has contributed to our Blog and is still participating in our small community, do keep the faith on us, in the end we will not disappoint you.
It’s been too long since I made a production diary entry but we have been very busy.
The development has definitely picked up the pace, and we are now working in parallel between the back and the frontend. More than ever I now know it will be extremely hard to launch our site due to a lot of unforeseen obstacles we were comforted with during the last week of programming.
Rest assured we still have the necessary backing to carry this to the end and I am quite satisfied at how things are turning out. I should be making an official announcement regarding the release date of the project sometime during next week.
Last week we got stuck in a couple of Javascript issues that really held us back. Honestly this was the first stage of the project where I seriously considered if we could in fact nail the deadline or not.
The problem with projects of this size is that one can easily focus a lot of attention on something that completely stops everything else, yet if you don’t devote the necessary attention to a problem you will pay for it in the future.
This week will be decisive in the sense that I might be confronted with the decision to drastically increase our development base, and unfortunately our costs as well.
So this week I tested for the first time the interfaces of the reserved area, and let me tell you they are turning great despite the fact that we are using a lot of javascript that make them extremely complex. We are now able to register, create a user profile, login and change the profile data in the reserved area.
Since everything is so interconnected, it’s hard to completely clear areas of development, this means that we will be going to go through all the functionalities without quite completing them at 100%. Next week we should start working on the movie pages as well as the user profile page.
Apologize for the slight delay of this week’s production diary.
This week the development team’s efforts focused on the reserved area, the area of the site where members will edit their accounts information and change anything from the profile page information to the favorite films listing, view and edit past reviews, and of course, vote on the member and movie awards.
We are now starting to dig deep into the frontend functionalities, and during the next week we should finally be able to test a frontend prototype.
An interesting side fact is that we are now well into 8000 twitter followers, a big thanks to all our followers!
Albright guys, we have concluded the first major milestone of our development.
Strategy wise things could not be better; we have financing in place that pretty much covers all of our running costs for at least two years. It was great to see an external source put this in writing, remember Ourplot is going to be a free service, so financing is absolutely the life line of the project.
On the development side of things, the programmers and designers have been doing a very good job, but there is no denying that as things stand, code wise, we are late and we need to really pick up the pace in order to nail our deadline.
We have zero flexibility in regards to our release date since we have partnerships, and most importantly, sponsorship agreements in place that viciously dictated by time.
It’s good to know where we stand, even when things aren’t running as well as we wanted, knowing empowers us to decide what course of action to take. A bit of more “hands on
So the day of our first bit test is here. It’s been a really good week, a lot of progression in the code side of things, but we have also managed to snatch some really interesting partnerships and we are in in the process of sponsoring one of my absolute favorite youtube channels that some of you, specially the movie buffs, have heard of for sure.
Another important piece of news is that next week we will be making a new addition to our editorial team, one of our new community members that has been very active in our blog, and is a fantastic writer and avid movie fan, more on that later.
The Audit should start at the end of the day, and hopefully it will tell us that we are right on track.
Will keep you updated as the day progresses.
This week we should be wrapping up most of the core functions, but most importantly make substantial progress in the frontoffice. The registration system should be completely functional, as well as the authentication system.
I really hope that this week we can move along to the reserved area and also get some of the work done on that area as well.
This is a really difficult stage of the project, we are all working so hard, but what you see visually does not reflect the time that is being put into the project, more specifically the code.
Also as most of you know, at the end of the week we are going to be audited. It’s not as bad as it sounds; it’s just a way for us to have an external source help us keep on track, so I am really looking forward to it.
